NIGERIAN international and NBA star, Al-Farouq Aminu has emerged the winner of the 2016/17 Maurice Lucas award.
The prestigious award was presented to the Portland Trail Blazers forward during the National Basketball Association (NBA) game against the San Antonio Spurs at half-time.
Following this development, the Trail Blazers will make a $5,000 donation to a charity chosen by Aminu.
President of Basketball Operations, Neil Olshey heaped plaudits on the 2015 Afrobasket gold medallist.
“For the past two seasons, Al-Farouq has willingly accepted and thrived in any role asked of him.
“His unwavering commitment on the defensive end of the floor and the toughness he exhibits on the glass on a nightly basis make him an ideal recipient of the Maurice Lucas Award,” said Olshey.
Also in his remarks, president and CEO of Trail Blazers, Chris McGowan said: “Al-Farouq exhibits a team-first attitude and commitment to the community that makes him a deserving recipient of this year’s honour”.
Aminu, it will be recalled, was a member of D’Tigers who won the 2015 FIBA African Basketball Nations Cup in Tunisia, for the first time for Nigeria.
The 26-year-old who also represented Nigeria at the 2012 London Olympics was also named in the All-Star Five of the 2015 Afrobasket.
