Captain of IGC, Barrister Idowu Salami
No fewer than 130 golfers are expected to converge on the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Onireke, Ibadan for the two-day 5th Insurance Golf Open scheduled to tee off tomorrow.
Speaking at a press conference, Captain of IGC, Barrister Idowu Salami disclosed that both amateur and professional golfers across the country would participate in this year’s edition.
Salami said that the successes recorded in the previous tournaments have helped in promoting tourism and hospitality businesses in the metropolis.
“The Open is by virtue of a conglomeration of insurance companies like Mutual, Lead way, Equality assurance, Ensure, Lasaco Assurance plc, Cornerstone, AIICO Insurance, Custodian, Zenith Insurance, OldMutual, FBNInsurance, Consolidated Hallmark Insurance plc among others that have come together to showcase themselves and give back to the society through sports.
“The tournament is initiated and facilitated by one of our past captains and an insurance broker, Chief Babajide Olatunde-Agbeja. He is a member of the trustees of the IGC,’’ he said.
“We have three professional tournaments in the club: the Sovereign Trust handles one of the tournaments, while a conglomerate of other insurance companies handles the remaining two.
“Lawyers in the club have also come together to initiate the `Bar and Bench Open’, while the Medical Doctors have also collaborated to organise theirs.
“We encourage more people to play the game because it is beneficial to our health, and also allows for networking among the people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Agbeja said, “I am thrilled that we are set for the 5th Insurance Golf Open. When we started 1n 2012, I wanted the Insurance industry to contribute to the development of golf in Nigeria. Not only that they supported my idea to the fullest, we have many of my colleagues now playing golf. They were encouraged to play when their companies sponsored the tournament, so I am a happy man that my dream of propagating the game of golf has manifested.”
The closing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday by 5pm.
