The maiden National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Oyo State chapter table tennis championship kicked off on Tuesday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo stadium, Ibadan.
The tournament which has attracted no fewer than 106 participants including the chairman of Oyo State NURTW, Alhaji Taofeeq Oyerinde ‘Fele’ would end today.
Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Abayomi Oke, while declaring the tournament open lauded the organisers of the event for creating a platform for members of the union to develop both physically and mentally.
“We are here today to bring medical personnel to ascertain the participants’ physical fitness before the tournament.
“Our coaches are also here to fish out talents who can be groomed to stardom because our focus is on catch them young programmes,” Oke said.
The sports commissioner urged Fele to extend sponsorship of sporting events to secondary schools in the state saying it would help in the discovery of talents for the state ahead of major national championships.
Meanwhile, Fele in his remarks said the aim of the championship was to bring development to table tennis in the state which also serves as an avenue for recreation for transport workers.
“When one is engaged in sporing activities, one is bound to enjoy many benefits including sound health and high productivity,” he noted.
