CAPTAIN of Nigeria’s national men’s senior basketball team, Ike Diogu, has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the just-ended 2017 AfroBasket championship offered by Tissot.
Nigeria, it will be recalled, on Saturday night in Rades, Tunisia, surrendered the African title they won two years ago, to joint hosts Tunisia, after losing 65-77 in the final decided at the Salle Omnisport, Rades, Tunis.
Centre forward, Diogu, also emerged the tournament’s highest scorer with 132 points after becoming Nigeria’s highest points scorer in four of their six games at 2017 AfroBasket.
The 2015 AfroBasket gold medallist, Diogu who last played for Jiangsu Monkey King of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), netted a tournament-high 22 points per game, and averaged 8.7 rebounds per game at the prestigious biennial African championship.
Meanwhile, Also, 34-year-old Diogu and his team-mate Ikenna Iroegbu; Tunisia’s Mohamed Hadidane and Mourad El Mabrouk as well as Senegalese Gorgui Dieng made the All-Tournament Team.
