2024 NYG: SWAN lauds Team Anambra performance

The Anambra State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed admiration for the impressive performance of Team Anambra at the recently concluded National Youth Games, which took place in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.

In a statement made in Awka on Sunday, Chimezie Anaso, the Chairman of SWAN in Anambra, attributed the team’s success to the ongoing transformation within the Anambra State Sports Development Commission.

He highlighted that the improvements in sports under the commission’s current leadership are beginning to yield results.

Anambra secured eighth place on the overall medals table, claiming nine gold, nine silver, and eight bronze medals, totaling 26 medals.

Anaso praised the athletes for their discipline and consistent progress, noting that their performance has improved with each edition of the games.

He also lauded Governor Charles Soludo for his continued support of the state’s sports teams, ensuring Anambra’s participation in all national events since his tenure began.

“The achievements of Team Anambra at the National Youth Games are truly commendable. Finishing eighth overall and as the top team from the Southeast region is proof that sports in Anambra are receiving the attention they deserve. The governor’s support has been instrumental in this success.

“As sports journalists, we are pleased that Anambra has been consistently present at all major national competitions. Moreover, the grassroots sports development initiatives, particularly the school sports program under the Anambra Sports Solution Initiative (ANSSI), have been running smoothly,” Anaso said.

Anaso also emphasised that Anambra has been adhering strictly to the age limit of 15 years for the National Youth Games, with no cases of over-aged athletes.

He credited this to the state’s robust talent development program, which ensures a steady supply of young athletes.

He urged the state government to continue supporting the athletes by offering academic scholarships and providing access to top-tier sports training and mentorship to further develop their skills.

Anaso called for a stronger collaboration between the state government, sports academy owners, and facility operators to enhance the development of sports in the state.
