2026 Owan Marathon gets prize boost, cultural festival additions

Organisers of the annual Owan 10km Marathon have announced major upgrades to the 2026 edition as part of efforts to boost youth development and celebrate the cultural heritage of Owan communities.

Convener and President of the Global Bridge Initiative, Mr Chris Ojo, made this known during a visit to the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, in Benin.

Ojo said the marathon, now in its fifth edition, was established to discover and groom young athletes for future global opportunities.

He noted that the event has grown into a dependable platform for youth engagement and sports development in Edo State.

According to him, the 2026 edition will feature increased prize money to motivate athletes and attract broader participation.

The organisers also unveiled plans to expand the event into a full cultural and community festival.

Highlights will include the Mr & Miss Owan Cultural Ambassador Contest and a free medical outreach for residents.

Ojo reiterated earlier plans to sponsor outstanding runners to the Sports University in Afuze once the school begins full operations.

He said the scholarship initiative will target top performers in the 10km race.

He further briefed the Speaker on the Village Register Project, which seeks to document residents across Owan communities for better development planning.

During the visit, Ojo presented the Speaker’s official marathon kit, describing it as a symbol of partnership and support.

Responding, Hon. Agbebaku pledged support for the annual Owan 10km Marathon race.

He commended the organisers for initiative and noted that the event needs the support of Nigerians, particularly people from the state extraction for its multiplier effect.

“My plan is to ensure the Owan Marathon initiative is turned into a statewide event where athletes who will represent the state in competitions can be picked,” he declared.
