2026 WCQ: Three players suspended for Nigeria, Benin Republic clash

Tuesday’s decisive Group C 2026 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and the Benin Republic will be played without key players in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Benin coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that Sessi d’Almeida and Yohan Roche will miss the match after receiving their second yellow cards during their side’s 1–0 win over Rwanda.

“We have lost two players as a result of a second yellow card,” Rohr told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana. “All is possible for the three teams — South Africa, Benin and Nigeria. The decision is now in our hands. Big suspense until the end.”

For Nigeria, Ademola Lookman is also suspended after picking up a second yellow card in the 64th minute of the Super Eagles’ 2–1 win over Lesotho.

Under CAF rules, any player who receives two bookings in the qualifiers is automatically banned for one match.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle played down the impact of Lookman’s absence, stressing that the team remains ready for the task ahead.

“The team remains focused and confident. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough depth to compete effectively,” Chelle said.

He added that Lookman would still provide support from the sidelines. “Every player must be ready to contribute, on or off the pitch. We must stay focused and take control of our qualification destiny.”

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C behind Benin Republic and South Africa, making Tuesday’s game in Uyo a must-win for their World Cup hopes.
