Belgian league award, a boost ―Onyekuru

Nigeria international Henry Onyekuru has said he has been boosted in his fight to return to full fitness after he won the Most Promising Player of the Belgian league for the past season.

The former AS Eupen forward was honoured at the Soulier d’Or Awards in Brussels, Belgium – an annual award given the best player in the Belgian top-flight.

Onyekuru saw off competition from Mechelen’s Hassan Bandé and Landry Dimata after accruing 219 of 509 votes.

The Super Eagles forward bagged 24 goals for KAS Eupen to stay up in the Belgian top league.

“Because of my injury, I’m going through a difficult period now, but this award is a boost for me in my rehabilitation. It is proof that, if you work hard, you achieve your goals,” Onyekuru said after he won the award.

“This award is a beautiful recognition of my host country, which also means a lot for the further course of my career.”

The Everton loanee said he was not surprised by the recognition because he has worked hard.

“I am really honored by this recognition,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws. “But I’m not surprised, I worked hard last season, results are there, apparently others have noticed.”

His award was received on his behalf as he is still undergoing rehabilitation for a knee injury.
