5 iconic goals in Super Eagles history

The importance of goals in a football game can never be overemphasised. Over the decades, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have produced moments of magic that turned fierce rivalries into timeless memories.

From thunderbolts that silenced stadiums to dramatic strikes that rewrote narratives, these goals live forever in the hearts of fans.

In this article, Sporting Tribune spotlights five iconic goals that shaped Nigeria’s fiercest rivalries.

  1. Taye Taiwo vs Ghana (AFCON 2006, Egypt)

In a tight group-stage battle, Taye Taiwo unleashed a long-range missile in the dying minutes, beating Ghana’s goalkeeper George Owu to seal a 1–0 victory. The strike didn’t just earn Nigeria three points; it reignited a rivalry that had simmered for decades.

  1. Emmanuel Amunike vs Zambia (AFCON 1994 Final)

Though not a rivalry in the political sense, Zambia’s clash with Nigeria in 1994 symbolised a footballing battle of destiny.

Amunike’s brace, especially his second, a sharp, low finish inside the box, gave Nigeria their first-ever AFCON title. The image of him sprinting to celebrate with the Nigerian flag remains one of the most enduring scenes in the country’s football history.

  1. Sunday Mba vs Côte d’Ivoire (AFCON 2013 Quarterfinal)

When Nigeria faced Didier Drogba’s star-studded Ivorian side, few gave them a chance. But Sunday Mba, an unknown player from the local league, changed the narrative. He weaved through defenders and struck a curling shot that clipped the post and went in, sending Nigeria to the semifinals on their way to winning the AFCON 2013 title.

  1. Jay-Jay Okocha vs Cameroon (AFCON 2004)

It was the perfect response to years of pain. After losing AFCON finals to Cameroon in 1984, 1988, and 2000, Nigeria finally got payback in 2004. Jay-Jay Okocha’s thunderous free kick against the Indomitable Lions turned the tide, and Obafemi Martins later sealed a 2–1 victory.

  1. Victor Osimhen vs Benin Republic (2022 AFCON Qualifiers)

Modern rivalries also have their heroes. In 2022, Osimhen’s relentless drive and clinical finish in Porto-Novo gave Nigeria a narrow 1–0 win over the Benin Republic, extending a long unbeaten run against their neighbours. Even though Benin later got revenge in 2024, Osimhen’s performance that night underscored Nigeria’s dominance in the region.
