World Cup: Drake wins over N1bn from Canada vs South Africa bet

Canadian rapper, Aubrey Drake Graham, popularly known as Drake, has won a $770,000 (N1 billion) bet on Canada to beat South Africa in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 encounter.

The Grammy-winning artist shared details of the wager on social media ahead of the knockout match, drawing reactions from fans online. 

The bet, estimated at more than N1 billion, has earned Drake a payout of $1,001,000 as  Canada won the match.

He revealed that a conversation with South African DJ, Black Coffee, influenced him to increase the amount staked.

“Black Coffee was chirping in the DM. I had to raise my stakes,” the rapper wrote.

According to the bet slip shared online, Drake staked a total of $770,000 on Canada to defeat South Africa in one of the Round of 32 matches at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The Hugo Broos-led side impressed during the group stage, recording a crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea to seal progression from a group that also featured co-hosts Mexico and Czechia.

However, their historic run came to a heartbreaking end against co-hosts Canada at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where midfielder Stephen Eustáquio scored a stunning volley in second-half stoppage time to hand the hosts a 1-0 victory and a place in the Round of 16.

The result also marked Canada’s first-ever qualification for the Round of 16 at a FIFA World Cup.

Drake is known for making high-profile sports wagers on football, basketball and combat sports events. Over the years, many fans have linked some of his bets with unexpected outcomes, a trend popularly referred to online as the “Drake curse.”
