Former Barcelona striker, Robert Lewandowski, is close to joining Major League Soccer (MLS) side, Chicago Fire, after reaching an agreement to move to the United States.

According to the BBC, the 37-year-old Poland captain is expected to sign a two-year contract after leaving Barcelona at the end of last season when his deal expired.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also reported that all details of the move have been finalised, with Lewandowski expected to sign the contract in the coming weeks before the transfer is officially completed.

Chicago Fire first confirmed discussions with Lewandowski last December and have maintained contact with the veteran striker since then.

The club has held its MLS “discovery rights”, giving it priority to negotiate with the player ahead of other teams in the league.

Lewandowski attracted interest from AC Milan and clubs in the Saudi Pro League, but Chicago Fire now appear set to secure the signing.

He is expected to become one of the highest-paid players in Major League Soccer.

His arrival would be significant for Chicago, which is home to one of the largest Polish communities outside Poland. The club is currently third in the MLS Eastern Conference after reaching the playoffs last season and will return to league action on July 17 against Vancouver following the FIFA World Cup break.

Lewandowski leaves Europe after a career that established him as one of football’s leading goalscorers. He spent 12 seasons in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, winning 10 league titles and helping Bayern lift the UEFA Champions League in 2020.

He won The Best FIFA Men’s Player award in 2020 and 2021 and finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting in 2021. Although widely regarded as the favourite for the 2020 Ballon d’Or, the award was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After joining Barcelona in 2022, Lewandowski helped the Spanish club win three La Liga titles and the 2025 Copa del Rey.

He scored 120 goals in 193 appearances before injuries limited him to just 17 league starts in his final season.

If completed, the move will continue the recent trend of established European stars joining MLS, following Antoine Griezmann’s switch to Orlando City SC earlier this summer.
