Manchester City have confirmed the appointment of former Chelsea and Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca as their new manager on a three-year contract following the departure of Pep Guardiola.

The Italian has signed a deal that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2029.

Reports indicate Maresca agreed to pay a compensation package to former club Chelsea to complete the move.

Speaking after his appointment, Maresca described the opportunity as a “dream situation.”

“Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me.

“City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively.

“This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations.

“The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability.

“I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.”

Maresca returns to Manchester City for a third spell, having first joined the club in 2020 to manage the Elite Development Squad.

He guided the youth team to the Premier League 2 title in his first season, finishing 14 points clear at the top of the table.

After a spell with Parma in Italy, he rejoined City in 2022 as one of Guardiola’s assistant managers. He was part of the coaching staff that helped the club win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League to complete a historic treble in 2023.

Maresca left City to become Leicester City manager, leading the club to the EFL Championship title and immediate promotion back to the Premier League in his only season at the King Power Stadium.

He then moved to Chelsea, where he guided the London club to the UEFA Conference League title and secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League in his first season before leading them to FIFA Club World Cup success in the United States last summer.

In a statement announcing the appointment, Manchester City said:

“Manchester City is delighted to announce the appointment of Enzo Maresca as manager.

“The Italian manager has signed a three-year deal that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2029.”
