Irish sports diplomacy programme fosters unity, collaboration in Lagos, Nigeria

The Embassy of Ireland in Nigeria concluded its two-day pilot launch of the Irish Sports Diplomacy Programme, held at St. Finbarrs College in Akoka, Yaba.

The initiative successfully bridged cultures and strengthened ties between Irish and Nigerian youth and coaches through the unifying power of sports.

The event kicked off on Friday, June 26th, 2026, with an opening address by the Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Peter Ryan. Ambassador Ryan outlined the vision behind the initiative, emphasising sports as a vehicle for bilateral harmony. The first day of the event successfully united Lagos sports teachers for intense workshops on modern coaching practices.

Azeez Ladipo, General Manager of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, led a pivotal session on “Coaching the Modern Student-Athlete,” stressing inclusivity and athlete-centred development.

Crucial conversations, supported by insights from the Nigerian Olympic Committee and the Chair of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), tackled the unique challenges facing the girl child in sports, including cultural, religious, and infrastructural barriers.

On day two, Saturday, June 27th, 2026, students from seven secondary schools in Lagos: St. Gregory’s College, Methodist Girls, Maryland Comprehensive, Holy Child College, Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Priory Prep School, and host college, St. Finbarrs College, converged for a vibrant cultural exchange.

Participants were introduced to various sports, including soccer, rugby, Gaelic football, and hurling. To promote camaraderie, students from different schools were mixed into collaborative teams, learning teamwork and safe play techniques.

Additionally, the Embassy presented students and participating schools with equipment including balls, helmets, and hurleys.

The landmark event concluded with a vote of thanks from Father Michael of St. Finbarrs College, celebrating a memorable weekend of sport, culture, and unity alongside Ambassador Ryan including Aduke Gomez and Alice Dina of Friends of Ireland Nigeria.
