Cameroon has been given the go-ahead to continue preparations to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), easing fears that it will not be ready in time.
Last summer, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Ahmad Ahmad challenged Cameroon to show it would complete preparations to stage the event, taking place from June 7 to July 7 next year.
But following an inspection tour of tournament facilities and infrastructure by CAF experts last month, a positive preliminary report was presented to the executive committee earlier this week.
CAF media chief Junior Binyam was quoted by AFP as saying Cameroon’s right to stage the event “is not being brought into question” ahead of a full report due at the end of this month.
The host nation’s task had been complicated by the fact it was awarded the right host the AFCON when it was a 16-team tournament, only for the CAF Executive Committee to increase the number of teams to 24 last year.
