Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud cannot appeal controversial red card against Paris Saint-Germain

The Frenchman was dismissed late on in Paris but UEFA rules state cards cannot be appealed unless a case of mistaken identity.

Arsenal cannot appeal Olivier Giroud’s red card against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Frenchman was dismissed in stoppage time during the 1-1 Champions League draw on Tuesday night.

Giroud clashed with Marquinhos and midfielder Marco Verratti, who was also shown the red card by Viktor Kassai.

Both players proclaimed their innocence with Arsene Wenger supporting his striker.

But Giroud is now facing a one-game ban, which will rule him out of the next group stage encounter, away against Basel.

UEFA rules state bookings or dismissals cannot be appealed, unless “the referee’s error was to mistake the identity of the player.”

After the draw in Paris, Giroud hit out at official Kassai and claimed he was “tricked” into sending him off.

The Arsenal striker said: “I’d already been booked so didn’t want to make trouble. I made a small challenge on Verratti but he threw himself onto the ground.

“I didn’t understand, so I asked him, “what are you doing?”, then he got up quickly and Marquinhos pushed me from behind.

“I don’t know how Verratti fell over a second time. I didn’t go looking for trouble so it’s frustrating.

“I think that the referee was tricked. Verratti was also on a yellow, so I was surprised by his behaviour.”
