At least more than 100 athletes from 30 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including those from higher institutions of learning, have stormed Abuja for the annual National Open Kickboxing Championship and Workshop, holding at the Indoor Hall, package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The week-long programme, according to the Technical Director, Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria (KBFN), Kevin Onyika, aimed to upgrade the officials about the new rules of kickboxing, prepare athletes for national and international engagements and also to create more awareness and bring more youths into the game in Nigeria.
Onyika said the workshop will not only expose the coaches to new rules and equip them for the championship, but it will also expose the athletes, comprising students from the universities, to the rules of engagement about the sports.
“This is a national open kickboxing championship and workshop. It is for us to learn and relearn. For those of us who are coaches, athletes and officials in kickboxing, the focus is to upgrade ourselves with the new rules of kickboxing. And then prepare ourselves for championships, both national and international engagements.
“We are expecting states. We are expecting universities. And we are expecting clubs. So, we are looking at having over 100 athletes because we are becoming a scoring event in NUGA. And this is an avenue for most universities to learn kickboxing.
“A lot of schools are sending their athletes and coaches to come and learn. So that they can prepare well for the upcoming NUGA games.
“Some states are going to use that venue to prepare their athletes. And their coaches will be more equipped. So, we are expecting a very large turnout.”
The KBFN official appreciated the support of the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), calling on corporate organisations and individuals to come to the aid of the Federation in the discharge of its operations.
