Bayern confident Robben will sign new contract

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expects the Netherlands international to follow in the footsteps of Franck Ribery and sign a renewal with the club, insisting he still has a lot to add

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is confident Arjen Robben will sign a one-year renewal with the Bundesliga champions.

The Netherlands international remains a key part of the Bavarian side. While he missed the opening games of the season due to injury, he has returned with his usual effectiveness, scoring four goals and setting up two in 10 appearances across the Bundesliga and Champions League.

However, the 32-year-old’s existing contract is due to expire at the end of the season and Bayern recently held talks with the winger to discuss a new deal.

No agreement has been reached as of yet, but Bayern are hopeful the former Real Madrid attacker will follow in the footsteps of Franck Ribery, who penned a one-year extension on Sunday.

“We have also spoken with Robben over a contract renewal,” Rummenigge said at a fan event.

“He wants to wait until Christmas, but there is nothing to suggest we will not agree a one-year renewal with him as well. I think things will work out.

“Ribery and Robben might be turning 34 and 33, respectively, but they still give us something extra.”

Robben has been a key player for Bayern since joining in 2009, though he has had constant struggles with injury. The winger has won five league titles in that time, as well as four DFB-Pokals, a Champions League crown and the Club World Cup.
