Bayern Munich appeared to be in full control after racing to a two-goal lead, but Bochum produced a stunning three-goal comeback to secure a dramatic Bundesliga victory over the 10-man hosts.
Raphael Guerreiro put Bayern ahead with two goals in the first 28 minutes, first slotting in from close range before heading home from Thomas Müller’s assist. The lead could have been extended when Leroy Sané won a penalty, but Serge Gnabry struck the post, missing Bayern’s first spot-kick of the season.
Bochum responded with Jakov Medic blasting his first Bundesliga goal into the top corner, shifting momentum just before halftime. Moments later, Bayern’s night worsened as Joao Palhinha saw red for a reckless challenge on Giorgos Masouras.
The visitors capitalized on their numerical advantage in the second half. Ibrahima Sissoko equalized with a header from Felix Passlack’s cross, and Matus Bero sealed the comeback with a composed finish on the counterattack.
Despite a strong debut performance from goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who stepped in for the injured Manuel Neuer and made a crucial save to deny Moritz Broschinski, Bayern suffered their first Bundesliga defeat since December 14.
While Bayern remains eight points clear at the top, Bochum’s first away win against them in 34 years lifts them within two points of safety in 16th place.
