Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has been crowned the African Player of the Year 2023 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The SSC Napoli forward won the CAF gong at Monday’s awards ceremony in Marrakech, breaking the over 23 years Jinx since a Nigerian, Kanu Nwankwo, last won the award.
Osimhen’s CAF award came after his goal glut inspired Napoli’s historic Serie A title run after 33 years, making him the first African to win the “Pichichi” (top scorer) award, shattering George Weah’s long standing record.
With 26 league goals, Osimhen’s contributions did not only won his Italian side Scudetto since the legendary era of Diego Maradona, but also earned him a spot in the Serie A Team of the Year and the Best Striker award for the 2022/23 campaign.
Recall that Sporting Tribune reports Osimhen emerged the highest-ranked African in the 2023 Ballon d’Or after finishing eighth .
