Canada Soccer reach agreement with women over pay dispute

Canada Soccer has reached an interim funding agreement with the women’s national team to resolve the pay dispute and prevent any strike from happening.

The players had openly expressed their frustration with the financial disparities between the women’s and men’s national teams.

The agreement was reached after the threat of legal action by the governing body. The dispute had caused uncertainty for the Canadian team, who are among the pre-tournament favourites in the Women’s World Cup scheduled for July.

The interim agreement will allow time to finalise a new pay agreement with both the men’s and women’s sides.

The terms of the interim agreement mirror a similar deal with the Men’s National Team Players that includes per-game incentives and results-based compensation.

Canada Soccer general secretary Earl Cochrane stated that this agreement is about “respect, dignity, and equalising the competitive environment in a world that is fundamentally unequal”.

A new collective bargaining agreement is in the process of being finalised with both teams, meaning the interim agreement is subject to change.
