Chapecoense goalkeeper to retire after plane crash tragedy before 300th game

Nivaldo was due to play his 300th game for the Verdão this weekend in order to play in front of his home supporters but will now hang up his boots following the horrific accident

Chapecoense goalkeeper Nivaldo has opted to retire after the plane crash tragedy rather than play in his 300th game for the club.

The 42-year-old was held back from the Verdao’s game last weekend against Palmeiras in Sao Paulo and also failed to fly with the club to Colombia to tackle Atletico Nacional in Medellin due to a desire to bring up his milestone in front of his home supporters.

Nivaldo was due to appear against Atletico Mineiro this weekend but will now hang up his boots, claiming everything happens for a reason.

“I was supposed to go on the trip but ended up staying,” Nivaldo revealed to Globoesporte. “Everything has a reason in life.

“I didn’t travel to Palmeiras [last weekend] because it would make my farewell game to play here against Atletico-MG, when I would complete 300 games for the club.

“As there was a change in the trip, they would not return to Chapeco and instead go straight from Sao Paulo to Medellín. So [Chapecoense coach] Caio said he would not take me.”

Tributes continue to pour in for the victims and support offers to their friends and family ahead of the side’s return to the Condá Arena stadium in Chapecó, which is situation in the Southern state of Santa Catarina which neighbours Argentina.
