Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, says he has a clear plan to integrate club-record signing Morgan Rogers alongside Cole Palmer, insisting the England midfielder has the quality to make an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge.
Rogers completed a reported £117 million move from Aston Villa last week, making him the most expensive British player in football history. The 24-year-old signed a six-year contract with Chelsea, with the option of an additional year, and is expected to join the squad after his holiday following England’s FIFA World Cup campaign.
Speaking during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Sydney, Alonso said the club targeted Rogers because of his ability to influence games quickly.
“In that position we needed an important player, and I’m sure there were not many better options than Morgan Rogers,” Alonso said.
“You need players who can have that almost instant impact and I’m sure Morgan won’t need much time to adapt to the club, the system and his team-mates.
“That was the idea, to get a top player, and Morgan is one of them.”

The Spanish coach also dismissed concerns that Rogers’ arrival could affect Palmer’s role, revealing he has already mapped out how both players can operate in the same team.
“I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well,” Alonso said.
“We need to have a good mix. If we get that balance right and those special players in the right positions, with good control, then we will be more competitive with and without the ball.”
Palmer and Rogers have built a close relationship through England’s national team, with Rogers previously describing the Chelsea playmaker as one of his closest friends in football. Both players have also expressed excitement about the prospect of playing together at club level.
Rogers arrives at Chelsea after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s standout attacking midfielders at Aston Villa. His versatility allows him to operate centrally, on either wing, or behind the striker, attributes that fit Alonso’s preference for fluid attacking football.
Chelsea’s summer recruitment has continued under Alonso as the club reshapes its squad ahead of the new season.
The Blues are expected to complete the signing of France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal reportedly worth £52 million. If confirmed, the 26-year-old would become Chelsea’s oldest signing since 2022.
Chelsea have already added winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Midfielder Valentin Barco, also from Strasbourg, is also expected to join before the transfer window closes.
With nearly 40 players currently in the first-team squad, Chelsea are also expected to sanction several departures before the end of the summer transfer window to comply with squad balance and financial regulations.
“We want a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality,” Alonso said.
“Those things need to match in terms of maturity, but I think we are starting the new season with good energy. That’s important.”
He acknowledged that Chelsea’s transfer business is not yet complete.
“We need to know that there will probably still be some movement,” Alonso added.
“We need to be flexible and quick to act. The main thing is that we have a clear idea, a clear plan that we have built.
“It will probably change before the transfer window closes.”
Chelsea will continue their preparations in Australia before returning to England to complete pre-season ahead of the 2026–27 Premier League campaign, with Alonso aiming to build a squad capable of challenging domestically and in European competition.
