Croatia have reappointed former defender, Slaven Bilic, as head coach of the men’s national team, marking his second spell in charge after replacing Zlatko Dalic.

The Croatian Football Federation confirmed Bilic’s appointment following Dalic’s resignation after Croatia’s round-of-32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Portugal.

Bilic, who previously managed Croatia from 2006 to 2012, expressed confidence in the squad and his readiness to return to the role.

“I have the complete confidence in our players, and it is my responsibility to bring energy, ambition and determination to ensure that Croatia remains among football’s elite,” Bilic said.

“I am genuinely happy to start this challenge and I feel fully prepared for it – as a more mature and experienced coach than in 2006, yet with the same motivation and desire to see Croatia stay powerful, bold, and successful.”

The 57-year-old represented Croatia 44 times as a player and was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup before losing to eventual champions France.

During his first spell as national team coach, Bilic guided Croatia to 42 wins, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches.

Bilic has also managed several clubs, including West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion and Watford in England. His most recent coaching role was with Saudi Arabian club Al-Fateh during the 2023-24 season.
