According to Guinness World Records, Curaçao secured the record when it booked its place at the 2026 tournament on November 19, 2025, with a population of 156,115 at the time of qualification.

The decisive result came in Kingston against Jamaica, sealing qualification and confirming the island’s first-ever appearance at football’s global showpiece.

Record confirmation

On Tuesday, Guinness World Records officially presented the certificate to the President of the Curaçao Football Federation, Gilbert Martina, in Houston, USA.

The organisation confirmed the category as “Smallest country by population to qualify for the FIFA World Cup,” placing Curaçao ahead of Iceland, which previously held the record after qualifying for the 2018 tournament with a population of about 350,000.

Curaçao’s path to the World Cup was built on consistency as the team finished top of its CONCACAF third-round qualifying group, recording three wins and three draws in six matches.

Managed by Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, the Blue Wave completed the campaign unbeaten, a run that underlined their rise in regional football.

World Cup debut

Curaçao’s first appearance at the World Cup has already produced milestones, as in their opening match against Germany, Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal.

Despite a 7–1 defeat, the moment secured Curaçao a place in the tournament’s early storylines.

Global recognition

Guinness World Records stated: “The small Caribbean island of Curaçao, managed by Dutchman, Dick Advocaat, finished top of their CONCACAF third-round qualifying group with three wins and three draws from their six games.

“The ‘Blue Wave’ completed their football fairytale with a 0–0 draw against Jamaica on 19 November 2025, ensuring their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

Curaçao’s inclusion among football’s elite nations has drawn global attention, with its debut seen as one of the standout qualification stories of the tournament.

With its record now officially confirmed, the island has secured a place in football history as the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup stage.
