The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung on Tuesday inaugurated a 33-man Transition Committee of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).
He said this had become imperative to improve the continued progress of the Youth Council.
While inaugurating the committee in Abuja, the minister urged members to be dedicated to duty and not be swayed in any way by antics of politicians who might want to hijack their aims and objectives of establishing the National Youth Council.
According to him, “it is very sad having started the Youth Council at the risk of our lives, today under democracy in the past seven years, the youths of Nigeria went and negotiate their future for peanuts laying claims that they are the youth leaders of this nation. I must state here today that those that are going to be sworn in, you must not put any seal on your cap because it is those seal that you put on your cap that makes you to forget that you owe the young people of this country a responsibility.
“After this inauguration, your responsibility is to organise an encompassing gathering of the youths of Nigeria, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will finance this gathering to ensure that the youths of Nigeria gather and a new direction is explained to them.”
Chairman Board of Trustees, NYCN, Ambassador Akoh Dickson, while congratulating the newly appointed committee members, charged them to be dutiful and contribute immensely to the development of the NYCN.
He said: “To the members of the National Transition Committee, Electoral Committee and Congress Planning Committee that are inaugurated today, I congratulate you all and urge you to use this privileged position conferred on you to contribute meaningfully to the development of Nigerian youths, peace and progress of the NYCN with a view to engraving your names on the canvass of history of our great Council.
“Remember, your tenure is time-bound, knowing well that it is not how long you stay in office that matters, but the quality of your contributions that will speak for you long after you have left the office that matters. You are hereby advised not to see this position as an avenue to enrich yourselves, but an opportunity for you to serve our nation on this platform.”
The newly appointed Committee included six members for the electoral committee, 11 members for the planning committee and 33–man for the National Transition Committee, all chosen from the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The Committee is expected to serve for six months.
