Football may be played for fun, passion, and business, but at the professional level, recognition and reward drive performance.
Beyond goals and trophies, players compete for personal glory, the titles that immortalise their names in football history.
Over the decades, individual football awards have become a defining part of the sport’s culture, celebrating players who perform consistently at the highest level. These honours not only reward excellence but also shape a player’s legacy, separating the great from the legendary.
While some individual football awards recognise a season’s brilliance, others highlight moments that capture the spirit of the game. Each award carries its own weight, history, and influence, reflecting how greatness is measured in football.
From the globally revered Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Men’s Player to continental and performance-based prizes, these recognitions serve as milestones in footballers’ careers, symbolising excellence, inspiring ambition, and connecting generations through the pursuit of greatness.
In this feature, Sporting Tribune explores the world’s most prestigious individual football awards.
Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or, established in 1956 by France Football, remains the most prestigious individual football award globally. It is given annually to the best male player based on performance over the previous season.
Originally exclusive to European players, eligibility expanded in 1995 to include all players active in Europe and later, in 2007, to players worldwide.
Voting was once limited to journalists but now includes national team captains and coaches.
Between 2010 and 2015, the award merged with FIFA’s World Player of the Year to form the FIFA Ballon d’Or before returning to its independent form. Lionel Messi holds a record eight titles, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with five.
France and PSG forward, Ousmane Dembele, currently holds the award.
The Best FIFA Men’s Player

Introduced in 1991, this award (Formerly FIFA World Player of the Year) honours the world’s top player, chosen through votes from national team coaches, captains, and journalists.
The Best FIFA Men’s Player is an association football award presented annually by the sport’s governing body, FIFA.
After merging with the Ballon d’Or in 2010, it was separated again in 2016 and renamed The Best FIFA Men’s Player. Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo de Lima have each won the award three times, setting the standard for international excellence.
The current holder is Brazil and Real Madrid forward, Vinícius Júnior.
CAF Player of the Year

The CAF Player of the Year, presented by the Confederation of African Football since 1992, recognises the continent’s top performer annually.
Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon and Yaya Touré of the Ivory Coast share the record with four wins each. Didier Drogba holds the record for most top-three finishes with nine.
In 2024, Ademola Lookman of Nigeria became the latest recipient, continuing Africa’s proud football legacy.
UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award

Launched in 2011, this award honours the best player in European club and international competitions over a season.
Candidates are assessed based on consistency and impact. Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to have won it three times, including back-to-back titles.
In 2023, Erling Haaland claimed the award after a record-breaking season with Manchester City.
FIFA World Cup Golden Ball

The Golden Ball is presented to the standout player of each FIFA World Cup, recognising influence and brilliance throughout the tournament.
First introduced in 1982, no player has ever won it twice. Historically, it often goes to players from runner-up teams, except in 1994, when Romário of Brazil won as a champion.
Lionel Messi was the most recent recipient, taking the 2022 Golden Ball for his performances with Argentina.
European Golden Shoe

The European Golden Shoe (or Golden Boot) honours Europe’s top goalscorer each season, calculated by a points system weighted by league strength.
Lionel Messi has won it six times, while Cristiano Ronaldo follows with four. Recent winners include Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane, who scored 36 goals for Bayern Munich in the 2023/24 campaign.
Kylian Mbappe took the award for the 2024/2025 season.
FIFA Puskás Award

The FIFA Puskás Award, created in 2009, celebrates the most beautiful goal of the year, focusing on skill, creativity, and fairness.
Named after Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás, it honours football’s artistry. No player has ever won it more than once. In 2023, Guilherme Madruga claimed the award for his spectacular overhead kick for Botafogo-SP.
Argentina’s Alejandro Garnacho won the 2024 FIFA Puskás Award.
