David Luiz admits he wasn’t paying attention for Liverpool’s opening goal against Chelsea

David Luiz has admitted Chelsea’s defence failed to organise themselves quickly enough for Liverpool’s first goal on Friday night.

The Blues saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end against the Reds, who were superb at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz, who was making his second debut after his £34million return to the club from PSG, would have been hoping for a strong showing from a defensive perspective.

However Chelsea fell behind to a Dejan Lovren goal that came courtesy of some shocking marking.

Speaking to Chelseafc.com, Luiz explained: ‘Normally you have a line to defend the free-kick but they played short and they played quickly, and we didn’t organise the line quickly so that is why they had two or three free players at the back and they scored a goal.

‘This is the Premier League. When you make a mistake and don’t pay attention, particularly from the free-kick, you pay.’

Luiz was full of praise for the performance of the visitors to west London.

‘Liverpool controlled the game in the first half with a lot of possession, changing position,’ he said.

‘Their second goal was amazing, the first one was a quick free-kick and we must pay attention to this sort of thing because they started better than us.

‘The second half we controlled the game, almost scored a second goal to draw and of course it is not a good night for us but we’ll keep fighting for the next games.’
