The Deputy Chief Whip of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Otuekong Nse Essien, has given a sense of belonging to hundreds of inmates serving various terms in the Uyo prison.
The lawmaker representing the Onna State Constituency donated trophy and solely sponsored football competition among inmates of Uyo prison as a mark of commitment towards prison reforms in the country.
Performing the kick-off of the competition tagged ‘Indomitable Cup’, the lawmaker explained that the programme became necessary to ensure that “the inmates do not live with a sense of hate in the prison”.
Essien said he was moved to provide recreation for the isolated people “so as to give them self worth and for easy re-integration into the society when they complete their stay in the prison”.
While enjoining the inmates to be of good behaviour during their confinement period, he assured them that they were not forgotten in the socioeconomic and political scheme of things.
“You part of us, be of good behaviour so that when you leave here you become a better person that will be easily reintegrated into the larger society. My aim is to give you that sense of belonging so that when you leave here your lives will not be the same thing,” Essien said.
He promised to celebrate the Christmas and the New Year with them on Wednesday (tomorrow) when the final of the competition holds within the prisons walls.
