Eagles need upgrade — Rohr

GERNOT Rohr insists the Super Eagles need more youth and stamina in order to withstand the rigours of modern football.

Ronr told BEing Sport on Saturday in Libreville, Gabon that the European Championship in 2016 in France and the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon have shown clearly where the future lies.

“We have seen and learnt so much here (in Gabon). The intensity of the game dies with the final whistle but the essence of careful build-up is not lost on us all’’

“The AFCON and Euro 2016 have brought to focus the need for managers to get closer to the team and analyse what the team can do at the closing stage. Those who have strong team but failed to pay attention to their technical fault will not advance and match their ambition’

On the Super Eagles, Rohr said he now knows that the team needs more than he thought.

“We are looking for more players to make the team competitive, now we need to look deeper at the team we have and acquire what we lack that modern teams have. To build a championship team we need all-round improvement in how we set out the team.

“We are going to work a lot harder than we do. We are leading our World Cup group but we have to ask ourselves what has happened to the Ivory Coast and Senegal who are also leading their groups.”

Rohr was in Gabon as a TV pundit for the duration of the Nations Cup.
