MICHAEL DAWSON powered Hull into the League Cup quarter-finals for the second year running.
Bristol City sub Lee Tomlin did manage to set up a nervy finale in stoppage time as he ran at the Hull defence and lashed a deflected effort past the helpless Jakupovic – but it was not enough.
The ex-England centre-back, who won the competition with Spurs in 2008, headed home Ryan Mason’s corner just after the break.
That was after Harry Maguire had nodded in another Mason corner a minute before half-time.
Tammy Abraham came on for the much-changed hosts on the hour but by then, it was too late as Mike Phelan recorded his first win since being named permanent Tigers boss.
