Elegbeleye celebrates Amokachi on 52nd birthday

Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has hailed former Nigerian international, Daniel Amokachi, on his 52nd birthday, describing him as a role model for the domestic league players.

The NPFL boss described Amokachi as a worthy ambassador of the League saying his footprint on the nation’s football is remarkable as he urged players plying their trade outside the shores of the country to consider playing in the League before calling it a wrap.

Why Nigerian clubs struggle in CAF competitions — Amokachi

“As one of the home grown players that went to Europe and blossomed, Dan is a worthy ambassador of the domestic league.

Like football stars from Argentina, Brazil and South Africa, the Bull hung his boots in Europe but came back here to inspire the younger generation of players on the pitch when he joined Nasarawa United in 2005.

“This is the message we have been preaching to other Nigerian big players. They should come and be an attraction to the NPFL,” Elegbeleye said.

Amokachi was born on December 30, 1972 and played for Club Brugge of Belgium, Everton FC of England and Besiktas of Turkey. He also had stints as a coach with club like Enyimba of Aba, Lobi Stars and others.

Amokachi won the 1994 AFCON with Nigeria, was part of the Dream Team 1 that won the football Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996 and also won the FA Cup with Everton.
