Chelsea’s striker Tammy Abraham – currently on loan at Swansea – is considered by England manager Gareth Southgate as an outside for a World Cup place.
Abraham has decided to represent England rather than Nigeria and will be encouraged by reports in The Times that he is in the thoughts of Southgate, who watched him against Arsenal on Saturday.
It is thought that with doubts over the fitness of Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge, and the poor form of Jermain Defoe, Abraham is one of Southgate’s other striker options.
Say The Times: ‘While Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford are certainties to travel to Russia and Jamie Vardy is likely to make it, one or two striking slots are up for grabs.
‘Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck’s repeated injury problems may count against them, as may Jermain Defoe’s age as he approaches his 36th birthday.’
