EPL: Battle for Europe enters final stretch

The race for European places in the Premier League is gradually moving to the final stretch, with several clubs still in contention across three competitions.

With a handful of matches left, positions remain unsettled, and the margins are very tight.

More than half of the league’s 20 clubs are still in the mix for qualification into the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League, and just eight points separate the teams placed sixth to 14th, underlining how open the race remains.

Fifth UCL spot in play

The Premier League is set to have five teams in next season’s Champions League through UEFA’s coefficient ranking. It means finishing in the top five will be enough to secure a place in Europe’s top competition.

Arsenal and Manchester City have already secured their places. Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool strengthened their positions with wins last weekend and now hold an advantage over the chasing pack.

United and Villa sit eight points clear of sixth place, while Liverpool have a five-point gap. All three also have a game in hand, putting them in control of their run-in.

Sixth-place race intensifies

There remains a possibility that a sixth-placed finish could also lead to Champions League qualification, depending on other European outcomes. That has added weight to the battle just outside the top five.

Brighton & Hove Albion moved into sixth after beating Chelsea 3-0 and held that position after AFC Bournemouth were held by Leeds United.

The gap remains narrow, with several teams still within reach of sixth place heading into the final weeks.

Europa League places at stake

Two Europa League spots are available to English clubs. One will go to the FA Cup winners, while the other is currently set for the sixth-placed team in the league.

That keeps pressure on sides just outside the Champions League positions. Clubs not used to European football are also in the mix, adding further interest to the run-in.

Bournemouth are pushing for a first European appearance, while Brentford and Everton remain within touching distance.

Conference League route still open

The Conference League place, tied to the EFL Cup winners, will pass down the table as Manchester City are already set for Champions League football.

As it stands, the highest-ranked team outside the Champions League and Europa League places will take that spot. That means seventh position could be enough to secure European football next season.

With several clubs separated by a small points margin, the fight for seventh remains as competitive as the race for sixth.

Key fixtures could decide outcome

The final weeks include matches between direct rivals that could shape the outcome. Manchester United host Liverpool on 3 May, while Aston Villa face Liverpool on 17 May.

On the final day, Brighton & Hove Albion take on Manchester United, and Manchester City meet Aston Villa.

With positions still undecided and fixtures involving teams in direct competition, the race for Europe is set to go to the final round.
