Lamine Yamal picked up an injury during Barcelona’s La Liga clash with Celta de Vigo at the Camp Nou, after scoring the team’s only goal of the game from a spot kick.
The Spanish international put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, but he immediately appeared to tweak his left hamstring in the process of striking the ball.
The young Spaniard felt a sharp discomfort in the back of his leg the moment he made contact. In a show of maturity rarely seen in an 18-year-old during such a high-stakes moment, he clutched his thigh and instantly signaled to the bench for a substitution, refusing to risk further damage.
Speaking with Movistar Plus, Pedri said the team only hope that Yamal’s injury is not significant.
“We still don’t know and I imagine we will need to wait for the medical tests tomorrow but I’m optimistic because he is young and should get back soon. It was a very important win because we needed to keep nine points clear at the top. We managed against a very tough opponent and that was crucial,”the midfielder said.
Though he attempted to carry on, the severity of the knock soon became undeniable, forcing him off the pitch.
The Catalans ultimately ground out a 1-0 win on Wednesday, further cementing their status as league leaders.
This victory stretches their advantage to nine points over rivals Real Madrid, providing a significant cushion that should allow the squad to absorb any potential spell on the sidelines for Yamal without compromising their title charge.
