Essien named as Akwa Utd technical director

The Akwa state government on Tuesday named lawmaker, Otuekong Essien as the new technical director of Akwa United, a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side.

Monday Uko, the state’s Commissioner for Sports, who announced the sack of the old technical crew said Essien, whose appointment is with immediate effect, would also take charge of Akwa Starlets, Ibom Youths FC and Ibom Angels as their technical director.

After nine league games in the ongoing season, the Promise Keepers, could only account for two wins, four draws and three losses with 10 points to show on the log.

Meanwhile, Essien who is the current deputy chief whip in the state house of assembly representing the Onna State constituency, shortly after his appointment was announced assumed duty, as he inaugurated the new management of Akwa Starlets FC where he charged them to turn the boys in the team to future soccer stars.

In an Interview with TribuneSport, Essien promised to breathe the winning spirit into the 2015 Federation Cup champions.

He identified lack of motivation as one of the problems militating against the team’s efforts at winning matches, just as he assured that Akwa United would witness a new lease of life as “players’ welfare will not be compromised, henceforth”.
