Ex-Commonwealth champion, Dele Jonathan begins final journey

Former national and Commonwealth lightweight boxing champion, Dele Jonathan will begin final journey home today.

The Oyo State-born boxing legend, died on April 29 this year in his residence in Ibadan, during a protracted battle with prostate enlargement.

Commendation service is scheduled to hold from 11am today at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, to be followed by lying-in-state and Christian wake at Elewura Grammar Community School, Challenge, Ibadan from 5pm.

Funeral service is scheduled for Saturday from 10am to be followed by internment at his residence.

The late boxer otherwise known as ‘Lion of Okeho’ it will be recalled, represented Nigeria at the 1966 Commonwealth Games as well as the 1968 Olympics before he turned professional in the early 70s.

He rose to prominence when he defeated Britain’s Jim Watt to claim the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title, on May 3, 1975 at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The late Dele Jonathan had a modest ring record of 40 wins (24 KOS), 10 losses and eight draws in 58 fights.
