FG charged to encourage school sports

GOVERNMENTS at all levels have been urged to take school sports seriously so as to discover more talents that would raise the standard of sports in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2-in-1 inter-house sports competition of Mopelola Memorial Nursery and Primary School and Hill Top High School, held at the Lead City University, Ibadan, proprietress of Mopelola School, Mrs Adepeju Jegede, said it is high time the Federal Government revived school sports across the country.

Blue House won in both the Primary and Secondary school categories while Green House emerged the winner in the march past both for the Primary and Secondary school categories.

Jegede charged the authorities to always visit schools and ensure that they have a better sporting environment before such schools can be accredited.

“It’s been a while since we held this competition and it is a step in the right direction that we have revived this meet.

“Inter house sports competition is a good avenue to engage our students so as to discover their potential through sporting events because it energises them and keeps them fit.

“I’m very excited and it is very important, apart from the festivity that comes from having inter-house sports, it is very important that we keep our health.

“My advice to the Federal Government is to encourage schools to make their students combine academics with sports. They can even encourage it by funding some of these school meets which I believe would give the country the desired in the long run,” Jegede said
