The House of Representatives Committee on Sports and the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS) have congratulated the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable feat at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship, which ended in Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday.
Sporting Tribune reports that D’Tigress clinched their seventh continental title and an unprecedented fifth straight championship, defeating Mali 78-64 in a fiercely contested final, and with the win, the Nigerian side maintained its flawless record in Afrobasket finals of never having lost a championship game.
The chairman, House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, described the achievement as a testament to Nigeria’s growing dominance in women’s sports and a reflection of the current administration’s increased investment in sports development.
“Winning the title five times consecutively speaks volumes of the consistency, talent and commitment of D’Tigress. This is a proud moment for all Nigerians and underscores the importance of President Tinubu’s renewed focus on sports,” the lawmaker said.
Amadu expressed confidence that the players’ efforts would be duly recognised and rewardedas he commended the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), the National Sports Commission (NSC ) and the Federal Government for their roles in the team’s success.
In the same vein, the Director General, NIS, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has also congratulated the Nigeria D’Tigress for their superlative performance and victory over Mali saying D’Tigress have once again proven their dominance on the continent.
Shaibu commended the technical crew, the Musa Kida-led Basketball Federation and the National Sports Commission for their moral and financial support to the team.
In addition to lifting the trophy, D’Tigress, along with three other African teams, secured qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will take place in Berlin, Germany from September 4 to 13, 2026.
The victory comes just days after Nigeria’s Super Falcons claimed their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, marking a golden period for women’s sports in the country.
