The president of the United States, Donald Trump, received the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw on Friday.
The award, which was introduced this year by the FIFA president Gianni Infantino, is meant for a person who has taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and, by doing so, united people across the world.
The announcement comes with a large golden trophy, a medal and a certificate before Trump gives a speech.
“This is truly one of the great honours of my life,” Trump said, claiming that he had saved “tens of millions of lives through diplomatic interventions and had “stopped wars happening just before they started”.
Recall that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuela’s Maria Corina Machado despite Trump’s consistent campaign to win the prize.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 – July 19.
