Five biggest stadiums in Nigeria

Nigeria is known for some of the most iconic sporting arenas in Africa, with the biggest stadiums serving as grand stages for football.

These sporting venues are not only architectural landmarks but also symbols of the country’s profound love for football.

In this article, Sporting Tribune highlights five of Nigeria’s biggest football stadiums in depth, examining how they have established the country as a key centre for sporting excellence in Africa:

Mashood Abiola National Stadium

Moshood Abiola National Stadium is currently the biggest sporting facility in Nigeria with a seating capacity of 60,491, and is also ranked in top 10 among the biggest stadiums in Africa. It is located in Abuja and usually hosts the national team’s matches.

Jos International Stadium

With a capacity of 60,000, Jos International Stadium becomes the second biggest stadium in Nigeria. The venue was opened in 2018, paving a new future for Nigeria’s football culture. Jos International Stadium has hosted several teams in Nigeria’s Super League, including Plateau United of the National Professional Football League.

Lagos International Stadium

The Lagos International Stadium, with 55,000 (which has been reduced to 45,000) is the third largest stadium in Nigeria, which is often used as the home ground for the Super Eagles and has hosted important matches, most notably the African Cup of Nations final in 1980.

Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium

Located in Port Harcourt, Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium is a multipurpose sporting facility in Nigeria. Named and established in 2015 after a former player, Adokiye Amiesimaka, the stadium has a capacity of 35,000 and serves as the home ground for Rivers United in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Muhammadu Dikko Stadium

Named after former Emir of Katsina, Muhammadu Dikko, the stadium has a capacity of at least 30,000 and it is the home ground for the Katsina United FC.
