Four countries making their debut in 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to be exciting as 48 National teams prepare to fight for the ultimate football prize from June – July 2026 in three North American countries.

Currently, FIFA has received 42 teams who have secured their place while waiting for 6 teams battling it out in the playoffs.

Surprisingly, four teams have carved their names into history by qualifying for the tournament for the first time.

Sporting Tribune spotlights four national teams that are making their debut in World Cup history.

Cape Verde – Africa

Cape Verde, a nation of just over half a million people, continues to redefine what is possible in African football. Their steady rise began more than a decade ago, highlighted by two Africa Cup of Nations appearances. The World Cup, however, remained a distant dream until now.

Uzbekistan – Central Asia

Uzbekistan’s qualification marks a milestone for Central Asian football. Long regarded as one of the strongest teams never to have appeared at a World Cup, the Uzbeks consistently came close in previous AFC campaigns but fell short in decisive playoff rounds.

Jordan – West Asia

Jordan’s rise into the World Cup picture has been gradual but steady. The nation performed impressively at the 2023 Asian Cup, signaling its growing competitiveness. The World Cup qualifiers cemented that progress.

Curaçao – Caribbean

Curaçao’s football transformation over the last decade has been remarkable. Once a low-profile team in CONCACAF, the Dutch Caribbean island invested in better coaching, talent identification, and diaspora integration.

The arrival of experienced international managers and the participation of Europe-based players with Curaçaoan roots accelerated the project.
