Haaland hits 50 UCL goals in City’s victory over Napoli

Erling Haaland etched his name deeper into Champions League history as he became the fastest player ever to reach 50 goals in the competition, inspiring Manchester City to a 2-0 victory over Napoli in their opening group stage clash at the Etihad.

The Norwegian striker needed just 49 appearances to smash the previous record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who reached the milestone in 62 games. Haaland’s towering second-half header finally broke Napoli’s resistance after goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic had frustrated City with a string of extraordinary saves.

For City, the victory was a vital start in their quest to put behind them last season’s disappointment, when they failed to reach the knockout rounds. The holders of the 2023 crown had been on a poor run of European form, losing five of their previous seven matches, but Haaland once again proved to be their difference-maker.

Pep Guardiola’s men dominated the first half, but it was Milinkovic-Savic who stole the spotlight early on. The former Manchester United academy goalkeeper made stop after stop, denying Tijjani Reijnders’ long-range effort, Phil Foden’s low drive, and even clawing out Ruben Dias’ header from point-blank range.

The Serbian also pulled off perhaps the save of the night when he reacted instinctively to divert a deflected Matteo Politano clearance off his own teammate toward goal. Each intervention kept Napoli clinging on, even as their defensive line was being stretched thin.

Napoli’s hopes of containment took a serious blow midway through the first half when captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo was shown a red card for hauling down Haaland as the last man.

Referee Felix Zwayer initially waved play on, but after consulting the pitchside monitor, he gave the defender his marching orders.

That dismissal forced Napoli boss Antonio Conte into a ruthless tactical decision. To reinforce his depleted backline, he sacrificed returning hero Kevin De Bruyne, who was making his first Etihad appearance since leaving City in the summer.

The Belgian midfielder trudged off to a sympathetic ovation, but his night ended after only 26 minutes.

City, already dominant, tightened their grip after the restart. Foden, lively throughout, produced a deft chipped pass into the box just before the hour mark. Haaland, timing his run to perfection, rose above his marker and powered his header past Milinkovic-Savic. It was goal number 50 in the Champions League for the 24-year-old – and relief for Guardiola, whose side had been wasteful in front of goal.

The strike was vintage Haaland: ruthless, simple, and devastatingly effective. He now sits atop the all-time leaderboard for fastest to 50 Champions League goals, another milestone in his short but already glittering career.

City added a second through Jeremy Doku, whose quick feet and precise finish ended Napoli’s faint hopes of a comeback. The Belgian winger’s goal wrapped up the points and ensured Guardiola began his 17th Champions League campaign with victory.

The game also marked the return to Manchester of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Højlund, both former United players who had joined Napoli in the summer. But the duo endured a frustrating evening, reduced to chasing shadows as City controlled possession with authority.

Napoli did threaten once while the game was still goalless, when defender Sam Beukema’s powerful header forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a sharp low save. But with ten men for over an hour, their resistance eventually crumbled.

The defeat extended Napoli’s miserable record on English soil in European competition — they have still never won in 13 attempts. For Conte, it was a harsh reminder of the fine margins in the Champions League, with Di Lorenzo’s red card proving decisive.

With Haaland in record-breaking form and Foden continuing to sparkle, Guardiola will feel his side has rediscovered their European bite. And for the Etihad crowd, this was more than just three points; it was another night to witness history from their goal-scoring machine.
