Hannah Obadina wins Tiger Ladies Open golf championship

ONE of the top female golfers in the country, Hannah Obadina, last Sunday was crowned the champion of the sixth edition of the Tiger Ladies Open golf championship.

The championship which was held at the Tiger Golf Club (TGC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Odogbo, Ibadan saw over 100 golfers participate in the different categories.

Obadina, a member of Sagamu Golf Club, played 184 Gross over the two days to beat her counterpart from Sagamu Golf Club, Esther Eze who played 183 Gross, while Praise Inalegwu shot a cumulative of 184 over the two days to claim the third position.

Mary Onyejose won the Tiger Ladies prize over the former Lady Captain of the Ibadan Golf Club, Jumoke Cripps.

Speaking after her victory, Obadina said she was very happy to have emerged the winner just as she owed her victory to God and her husband, Olu Obadina, who is a professional golfer.

She said: “Yesterday [Saturday] was a tough day for me, I don’t know I can win this championship but it was just God that saw me through.

“On Sunday, on Hole 12, my tee shot went to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General K.I Abdulkarim’s house and I still try to play beddie and win the championship.

“I need to thank Pro Olu Obadina for being there for me and I still want to win more championships before the end of the golfing calendar,” she said.

Also speaking, the Lady Captain of the club, Oyinlola Omajuwa, thanked her sponsors, saying going by the situation in the country today, it’s a little hard getting sponsors but she thanked God for everything.

She said “despite the golfing activities going round in the golf clubs, I still have over 10 players that participated in the championship, I am so glad”.

She said people should expect good outing in the forthcoming golf event coming up this weekend, that is the Elizabeth Akinjide Memorial Golf tournament and Tiger Open scheduled for next month.

Captain of the club, Dr John Dongo said the club had worn a new look just as he called on the golfers to come and see the development at the TGC.

He said “Golfers who have participated in the previous edition of the Open will agree that there is remarkable improvement in both the course and the Club House.”
