Hooligan sent to jail for punching Sevilla goalkeeper during Europa League match

A 20-year-old soccer hooligan was sentenced to two months in prison for assaulting Marko Dmitrovic, goalkeeper of Spanish club Sevilla during a Europa League match against PSV Eindhoven in February.

The hooligan, identified as Dylano K., was also found guilty of breaching a stadium ban imposed by the national soccer federation KNVB and had two previous convictions for soccer-related offenses.

He was under the influence of alcohol when he ran onto the field and punched goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic, but the goalkeeper was not injured and was able to wrestle the hooligan to the ground before stewards escorted him off the pitch.

The East Brabant District Court said in a statement that the hooligan managed to get into the Philips Stadium using a ticket bought by a friend.

The court described his actions as “completely disrespectful to the victim, the soccer clubs, and all true supporters of PSV” and added that he violated a stadium and area ban by going onto the field to assault a soccer player.

In addition to the two-month prison sentence, Dylano K was also sentenced to a further one-month prison term that he would have to serve if he re-offended. The judge took into account that he was fired from his job and kicked out of his supporters’ club following the incident.

PSV General Manager Marcel Brands condemned the hooligan in a statement after the incident and said the club would discuss how better to enforce stadium bans.

UEFA also opened a disciplinary case against PSV following the pitch invasion, and the club is likely to face sanctions from European soccer’s governing body.

PSV won the second leg match 2-0 but was eliminated 3-2 on aggregate. All PSV supporter organizations unanimously and explicitly distanced themselves from the disgraceful pitch invasion.
