I struggled to adapt to Conte’s Chelsea game plan ―Morata

Alvaro Morata seems to be enjoying himself at Chelsea again and he says it’s all thanks to the new boss, Maurizio Sarri.

During the summer, the Spanish striker was linked with a move to several Serie A teams with Juventus repeatedly mentioned as a possible destination.

But he seems to be enjoying a new lease of life at Stamford Bridge and his recent form has been exceptional.

Speaking to Chelsea TV, Morata said that he struggled during last season because of the way he was asked to play under former Blues boss Antonio Conte. Morata felt uncomfortable with Chelsea’s more direct style of play but he’s now happier with Sarri’s style. He also missed out on a place in the Spain squad for World Cup as a result of his inconsistent form.

“I think for me the most important thing is the mode we play,” said Morata. “Last year it was direct, I had to protect the ball in the air and that’s not my best quality. Now I can attack the spaces, play one-touch and go into the area for the crosses which is better for me.

“The last year was very hard for me, not just with confidence. The injury last season was very bad for me and my head, but when the ball goes into the net everything changes. Your mind isn’t blocked anymore and I hope now I can score a lot of goals.”

Morata was on the score sheet as Chelsea beat Arsenal 3-2 on Saturday and is looking sharp in and around the box again.
