IWD: Dikko, Olawande lauds women’s contributions to sports

Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko and the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande have lauded the contributions of women to nation building, describing them as beacons of hope to the society at large.

The duo, who were guests of honour at the 2025 International Women’s Day Football Tournament organised by FAME Foundation, themed ‘Accelerate Action’, said the role of women when it comes to social development and economic growth cannot be overemphasised.

According to Dikko, women are the most important people in the nation’s sports sector saying they have more achievements to show than their male counterparts just as he made reference to the first ever gold medal won by Nigeria at the Olympics and the achievements of the senior female football national team, the Super Falcons in Africa.

“We got our first Olympics Gold medal through a woman. Falcons have won a higher number of AFCON trophies than the Super Eagles. In athletics, basketball, badminton, para-sports and so on, it is women, so you see that female teams and athletes are bringing more glory and joy to the nation.”

He commended the executive director of FAME Foundation, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, for her impact in promoting the cause of the girl child while assuring her of continuous support and collaboration from the Commission.

The minister, while expressing the importance and respect he attaches to womenfolk, said the Federal Government was ready and willing to identify grassroots programs that will be of benefit to the youths and especially women to achieve their goals and objectives.

“For you to know the importance of International Women’s Day, I vacated my seat in the office for the minister of state for youth development to take charge because it is their day. These are the kind of things we want in Nigeria, anything that will make the youths feel the government is what His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu want,” the minister said.

Atoyebi said the Foundation will continue to celebrate women, protect and fight their rights to have that sense of belonging in the society.

She said, “We must celebrate our women because every day a woman is beaten, everyday a woman is denied her rights, everyday a woman is denied her leadership position and everyday a woman is facing one challenge or another.”

However, at the end of the contest, which was contested by eight teams, Federation of international Female Lawyers, Abuja, Team FIDA emerged as the overall winner of the football tournament, defeating Team FAME by one goal to nil. Team FIRS won the third-place match after a penalty shootout win over Team Bet9ja.

The eight teams that participated in the tournament are Team FIDA, Team FAME, Team NUT (Nigeria Union of Teachers), Team ASWHAN and Team Bet9ja.

Others are Team IDP, Team FIRS and Team ProSocial.
