The lawmaker representing Ikorodu Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbolahan Ogunleye, on Wednesday, donated table tennis boards to selected schools in his constituency.
The gesture, according to the lawmaker, is aimed at promoting sporting activities in the district.
He added that it is aimed at encouraging the students to embrace extra-curricular activities, saying that schools are not meant for studies alone.
Ogunleye said, “The table tennis boards would help the students to keep fit while in school. Table tennis is a skill that will help them keep fit all their entire lives. Physical education will not just train the body; it will train the mind.
“Table tennis is the number one brain game in the world. So it develops your reflexes and thinking as you will learn how to think quickly.
“It’s a win-win for the students; they get school bags and sports equipment to further develop their skills.”
He also commended the Lagos State Advertisement and Signage Agency (LASAA) under the leadership of its Managing Director/CEO, Prince Fatiu Akiolu, for donating flex-recycled bags to schools in the area in conjunction with Omo Dada Foundation.
The lawmaker emphasised the importance of the school bags initiative, noting that it will help the state to protect infrastructure as it is produced from waste flex that would have blocked the drainage.
He, however, urged residents in the state to keep all their used flex, saying that “it is not all wastes that are wastes in the real sense.”
The MD/CEO of LASAA, Prince Fatiu Akiolu, said over 2,000 students have been produced from waste materials collected from residents.
“We are turning waste to wealth. We turn used flex into school bags. We started last year, and we have given out 2,000 school bags from the materials that are collected from individuals, mosques and churches.
“They bring them to our offices in the local government secretariats and our head office. We turned flex into school bags in conjunction with Omo Dada Foundation.
“We have covered 10 local governments in the state, and the more flexible material we receive, the more local governments we will cover. We will soon cover all 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state,” he said.
The Chairman of Omo Dada Foundation, Mr Omoniyi Dada, urged private organisations to support the efforts of the government in promoting education and commended the producers of Indomie Noodles for joining them in giving items to the students.
