LIGUE 1: Kylian Mbappe surpasses Cavani, becomes PSG leading scorer

Kylian Mbappe scored his 201st goal for Paris Saint-Germain in a 4-2 win against Nantes on Saturday night, cementing his position as the club’s all-time leading scorer.

The French forward surpassed Edinson Cavani’s previous record of 200 goals with a late strike in the dying moments of the game.

Mbappe joined PSG on an initial loan from Monaco in 2017 and made the move permanent for a transfer fee of €180m. He quickly established himself as one of the most prolific scorers in European football, scoring on his debut in a 5-1 win against Metz and finishing his debut season with 21 goals in 44 games.

Since then, Mbappe has gone from strength to strength, scoring 33 goals in 29 games in the 2018/19 season and at least 30 goals in each campaign since then, except for the COVID-affected 2019/20 season. He is currently two goals clear at the top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts and has won the division’s Golden Boot in each of the last four seasons.

Mbappe’s scoring exploits have helped PSG to dominate French football in recent years, winning seven Ligue 1 titles in the last nine seasons. The club’s main goal, however, is to win the Champions League, and Mbappe will play a key role in their bid to achieve that goal this season.

At just 23 years old, Mbappe is widely regarded as one of the most talented young players in the world and has already achieved more than most players do in their entire careers.

His record-breaking goal against Nantes is just the latest chapter in what promises to be a remarkable career.
