Liverpool have been handed a tough Champions League draw as they will face five-time champions Bayern Munich in the round of 16.
The Reds came through a difficult group that also contained Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli, but the fact they finished second meant they always carried the risk of coming up against a European powerhouse.
Bayern have reached at least the quarter-final stage of the Champions League in each of the last seven seasons and, although they are off the pace in the Bundesliga, they have still impressed in Europe this term, emerging unbeaten from a group that also contained Ajax, Benfica and AEK Athens.

Liverpool and Bayern have not met in European competition since the 2001 UEFA Super Cup when the Reds prevailed 3-2 thanks to goals from John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen.
The last meeting between the two sides in the Champions League/European Cup was in the 1981 semi-finals – Liverpool prevailed over two legs in that one before going on to beat Real Madrid in the final.
Elsewhere in the draw and, after winning their group, Manchester City have been drawn against German Bundesliga outfit Schalke – who they last met in the UEFA Cup back in the 2008/09 campaign.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s reward for qualifying from Group H is a tie against the top scorers in the tournament so far, Paris Saint-Germain.
Tottenham have been handed the tough task of facing Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund – who topped Group A and are still unbeaten domestically.
The other fixtures see Atletico Madrid clash with Juventus, Ligue 1 outfit Lyon take on Barcelona, Roma face Group D winners Porto, while four-time winners Ajax come up against 13-time winners and defending champions Real Madrid.
The group winners are away in the first leg of the round of 16 on either 12/13 and 19/20 February, then at home in the return matches on 5/6 and 12/13 March.
