Man United not planning U-turn on Casemiro decision despite form

Manchester United will not reverse their decision to allow Casemiro to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old announced in January that he would depart Old Trafford when his £350,000-a-week deal runs out.

Despite his performances this season, United decided not to offer a new contract to the former Real Madrid midfielder, who will become a free agent.

Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had earlier questioned Casemiro’s £18.2m yearly salary and has pledged to reduce costs at the club.

The club opted not to activate the option in Casemiro’s contract as part of plans to restructure the squad.

Casemiro requested that the decision be made public early to avoid uncertainty toward the end of the campaign.

Since then, the midfielder has produced strong displays for the team.

He scored the opening goal in United’s match against Aston Villa on Sunday, his seventh goal of the season, six of them headers.

Casemiro celebrated in front of the Stretford End by pointing to the club badge on his shirt.

Fans responded by chanting “One more year, Casemiro”, repeating it after the final whistle as he left the pitch.

United captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro said after the match they hoped the Brazilian would stay.

However, sources say the club will not reconsider the decision.

Interim coach Michael Carrick also indicated there would be no change.

“When something is decided, it makes it a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick said.

“The impact he’s had has been terrific, through his influence within the team and with big moments and goals.

“There was a nice moment at the end with the supporters. He’ll enjoy that one.”
